Claude Kahun -
I found a few images of Claude Kahun’s which feature masks, i like the idea of masks for my final piece because i like this idea of a hidden identity which can be hidden or revealed to the world if the photographer so wants. Claude Kahun’s images are interesting because the people a very solum and the presence of the masks adds a dangerous scary kind of feel to the image.. unless i just have a secret fear of masks. The images feel dangerous as if something is not quite right in them and this sets me on edge when looking at the images, i think sometimes people behind masks can be a projection of innocence hidden by something more.

These are my final piece images, im going to choose a few images from this collection to present in a book and in frames as my final piece. These were mainly inspired by ralph eugene meatyard and the surrealist idea of a journey. I want to set out the images in the book as if there has been some sort of emotional journey throughout the course of the images. I think this would be good as it would capture that idea of a journey and also of passing time, which is very interesting to me, the time passing in the images will be shown through the use of presenting them as a journey, time has changed the way the man in the mask thinks and he has been on a journey through it.

- I find that what draws me to these pictures is the derelict back grounds, in my final piece i would like to incorporate the surrealist technique of Terrain Vague to give my images a dark and ominous derelict feel as shown here by Ralph Eugene Meatyard.

- I find this picture interesting because of the contrast between childlike activity paired with a a sense of danger or even demonism caused by the location of the photographs and the mask which seems to be stuck in time and unmoving through the photo.
- I would like to try something similar to this incorporating movement and stillness to show passing time and the stillness to reinforce the moving part of the image.
Mask Culture

Masks have been around us for years, they are used to create emotions of hide emotions from the face, masks are often divulged from the many expressions people exhibit on their faces. The word Mask comes from latin meaning ‘persona’ which means false face, this is important as it means that people can literally hide their faces or true emotions and literally put another one over the top. The deeper meaning of this would be that people are fake in the emotions they express and want to hide them their true emotions for a different one thats not truely theres. Masks were very important in culture, in ancient or ‘primitive’ times masks were seen to serve the community by being a balance between the natural and the supernatural or spirit world. Some even believed that special types of masks could cure disease. Masks are often used in dances, ceremonies and used to tell stories.
